About the Project

Naming Names

The slave trade was a huge part of the worlds history because is has had such an effect. Between the legal years of the slave trade, 1514-1866, about twelve million people were taken to the New World from their homes in Africa. Of course, there were various factors limiting the numbers, so it is believed as many as twenty-five million people were taken and affected by the slave trade.

The authors of this blog are all students from Butte Community College. This project is part of our World History class. The Naming Names project's purpose is to identify people, companies, and corporations that might have owned or operated slave ships during the time period of 1514-1640. Another aspect of this project is to investigate the factors that went into the Atlantic slave trade, and the "economic liberalism".

These findings and evaluations will be written in a form of blog posts on our home page. This project is mostly based on the website created by Emory University of Atlanta titled, Voyages: The Atlantic Slave Trade Database.
